(Fratrepreneur -- June 2010. CHICAGO) On a windy Friday afternoon I met up with Craig Palm (aka Na Palm) outside of his Michigan Avenue Studio. This was this last weekend in Chicago before going out to the West Coast to focus on recording tracks for his debut mixtape – Dirty Girls Like Dirty Beats. If you haven’t heard of him – you’re slacking. He’s been ripping up the clubs in Chicago performing as well as popping up on hot blogs like Fresh New Tracks and BroBible. Attorneys, traders, producers, promotors, marketing personal, videographers, PR, this dude has his camp together well. TEAM NAPALM. That’s what he always refers to it as. So give us some background about Team Na Palm and the other companies/brands you’re affiliated with. Drop those names.

Well basically I just signed with (Cross Coast) – an LA Based Interactive Media company that also represent Sam Adams. They are gonna put us on the Social Media map so I can focus on music. I mean we do all the blogs ourselves right now – I respond to every fan, that’s me. Michael Palm is my manager – he’s the one that gave me a microphone a year and a half ago. My boy Rou, he’s a legendary trader. Dropped out of U of I at 20 to start a hedge fund, and then he retired at 23. So he’s sitting around helping his hommie. Couldn’t have done it without those guys.  But we got a whole team on this. A lot of my boys are on deck. We got booking agents getting involved. I can’t say dates yet or venues because they’re not booked yet – but we got a national tour coming. East Coast, West Coast, Midwest. We are hitting like 25 cities. I’m so fucking pumped. Will always have my roots in the Chi though. Just need to be out West right now to focus and be where the entertainment industry is at. But, like I said…CHI ALL DAY.

When did you decide this was gonna be your life?

I got a tattoo at an Eastern Illinois show. I got it before I went on stage. They were chanting my name at the show, I had literally just started rapping. It blew me away. So I guess I did that on purpose so I had to be a musician.

That’s dope man…your way of committing to the game.

Yea, it was symbolic. I knew I always wanted a microphone up next to my heart. And it says “No Turning Back” in latin. So from that point it was like “Fuck it, we are gonna do this”. Everytime I wake up I see it and just be like “Let’s go to the lab and get these tracks in”. Every fraternity party, every time I got kicked out of my parents house it all led up to this man. And they’re proud right now. It feels good.

You’ve  been performing in all these Chicago clubs but no label execs seem to realize how the scene is blowing up in Chicago like this (Na Palm, J Kidd, Richkiddz). What are your thoughts on labels and the industry, and how are you doing it?

It’s weird man. I mean, We’re going Indie. Honestly, We don’t want to get fucked by record labels. My boy’s got label money. He saw a risk in me, and he took it. It’s a Bullish Market for Na Palm…I’m a 50-50 business partner with him. I have equity in Na Palm. Even if someone did come up to me, and offer me a $250,000 dollar advance. That’d be hard to pass up. But it’s like then I’m locked to them for 5 fucking albums -- I get a buck for a CD when they get 15. So there is so many things about the Indie grind where I’m in the right situation where we can do this like a big label. I mean fuck Capital Records coming to watch me if all they see is dollar signs. I have real family and friends working with me, no business sharks…But no your right man, I’m always curious to see the deals that these other artists get. Posner is signed to a major – he’s one of my favorite artists out right now.

What was Posner like to perform with?

He’s so fucking talented. I did my job, I hyped the crowd. People screaming “Na-Palm, Pos-ner”. I knew that was my job – I’m the opener, I get him hype. Then he came out…you know his songs, just like “She may not be in  Maybelline commercial”…with his foot up on the speaker. Then the show, 1,000 people, not just the first rows, everyone had their hands up in the air. Laser lights and shit going off – it was dope. He’s got those hit choruses and sounds just like he does on his CDs, not auto-tuned. He can accapella. He’s gonna be big. So fun to watch. That’s another collabo we’d like to do. I checked out him and Sammy Adam’s Lil 5 footage – so dope. They are performers.

Editor’s Note: So back about 2 1/2 months ago I did this interview -- I dipped out of work early and was very unprepared. But when I got in the studio -- all was good. The atmosphere was chill, and welcoming. They smoked me out on some purple…now that’s hospitality. I found out that Na Palm is a humble and personable dude that is really passionate about music, his friends, family, and city. At this point he was hustling hard, recording, and staying focused. Damn did that pay off. Dirty Girls Like Dirty Beats is this summer’s hottest mixtape. Nay’s got damn near 200,000 facebook fans. He’s going on a national college tour and also performing in front of 40,000 people along side the likes of Nas and Lupe Fiasco in his home town of Chicago at the North Coast Music Festival. He is definitely a Fratrepreneur -- and is about to take the music game by storm.

During my daily trolling of news media, I encountered an interesting article on the NYTimes – Entering a Sorority’s Forbidden Precincts. Naturally, I had to investigate. Turns out Disney plans to buy Playdom, the maker of the Facebook social game Sorority Life (among others). This is the game where you buy your boyfriend based on his “charm” and “popularity” points, keep him from being stolen by your sorority sisters (seriously), buy the trendiest new outfits, and climb the campus social ladder through various other means. Oh, and did I mention this deal is worth up to $763 million dollars. Job Opportunity -  Any developers interested in creating a Fraternity Life application? Must have extensive knowledge of shotgunning keystones, and have a vast array of pastel and seersucker attire. Get at me.

Can’t lie I was a little disappointed…given the name, I was hoping it would be something a little more scandalous. Regardless, it was pretty interesting. Disney is apparently trying to beef up their interactive media portfolio with anything and everything they can get their hands on (according to this author’s opinion). Playdom’s portfolio of other games includes those related to mafia, bars, vineyards, and probably some other random shit. The interactive social media game market has been very hot lately, with market leader Zynga leading that way with FarmVille and MafiaWars. And it seems that Disney is willing to sacrifice it’s wholesome image to get a slice of this pie.

(Editor’s Note: Apparently social online games are a viable business sector and a promising market for young, creative entrepreneurs. With that being said, I passionately hate all of these facebook apps. I do not want to know about your lost cow, new ribbon, or crop performance. Fuck Yourself.)

It’s Friday – motivation is low, weekend anticipation is high. Between texting (ex) sorostitutes to see what Chicago drinking establishment they are attending tonight and plotting my ultimate Fantasy Football strategy, not too much “real work” will get done today. Now we’re back, and want to give some love out to “Making Moves”, a reality video log series about “Five businesses. One office. Average age of 21 years old.” Last year, I heard of Alex Hodara and how while in school at Boston University’s School of Management, he got his real estate license and started Hodara Real Estate Group without taking on debt or outside investments – impressive. He has since grown the Hodara Group to include a real estate academy, and a real estate development and property management arm.

The idea of Making Moves is a work of simple genius – utilize the dynamic exposure you can get from social media to broadcast, market, and promote your unique case (age) and business. It’s a compelling story as well – young entrepreneurs pursuing their passions (whether it be Real Estate Development, or Music – they have formed an independent record label, Revel Me Records, to sponsor the music of David Revel Miller). Gotta give props to these guys for devising this creative way to market themselves. Wether you’ve been a fan since 1961 or just bought your Byfuglien jersey after Game 2 -- Chicago loves the Blackhawks. Our mixture of young stars and seasoned vets have brought a championship to the Windy City. Wrigleyville, River North, Lincoln Park, Loop, Wicker Park, out to the burbs…Chi Town is INSANE right now. The parade will only get more wild. I love this city.

During the post game interview Patrick Kane was being asked how it feels to win the Stanley Cup in overtime -- at the age of 21. He was also told by the NBC Sport Correspondent to “Be on your best behavior during the parade“, to which Kane answered “Not a Chance“. He then proceeded to call up his boys from his hometown of Buffalo,NY to introduce themselves and celebrate in front of the reporters. Damn he is a Bro. I expect the quality of women he will be riding in limos with shirtless to exponentially increase (I’d smash the one on the right though).

In the not so distant past I can recall attending sorority events and having a marginally good time. Typically, the drinks were too expensive, the inter-couple conversations too forced, and the general Fratmosphere too, well…formal. However, I now realize that these don’t always have to be this way. Here is a letter sent to the President of the Pi Beta Phi Sorority at Ohio University from the Director of the Banquet hall in which they had their formal…

My first thought was – Holy Shit. Of course this has caused a media storm. The Huffington Post and The Smoking Gun were all over this story. I bet Pi Phi Nationals are shitting themselves right now. Sorry, that Chapter just happens to consist of sluts. And this reputation will undoubtedly stay with them for the next couple of years. But, I encourage these ladies to embrace it…don’t make excuses, don’t try to cover it up. Just be like…“Yea, I fucked a guy under a table at my spring formal. So what?” Even if you were the conservative girl in the corner appalled by your sister’s actions, no one is gonna believe your innocence. So make up a sensational story of how you gave the waiter beej in the kitchen while your boyfriend was shitting in the urinal. BAM, you’re a star.

The Fratrepreneur weighs in: Honestly, in my college career I’ve witnessed crazier/raunchier/dirtier happenings, but this is not something you want thrown into the public light. This whole sorority’s reputation is tarnished nationally. These girls can’t put this organization on their resume or publicly admit to being a part of it during this event. Which really sucks, because I’m sure a lot of these girls accomplished many valuable and reputable things while being Pi Phis. Lesson here is: take responsibility quickly, be sincerely apologetic, cover the damages you created, demand privacy, and get this taken care of swiftly and discretely. Go ahead and fuck your date on the sink of that banquet hall men’s room, just be ready to pay for it when it breaks.

But shit, I mean he holds Barca’s goals scored record, and is the 2009 World Footballer of the year. Why not? Plus Cheryl Cole is SMOKING HOT. I mean…I’d smash.
